There is something about knowing someone’s name. You see them in the grocery store, you exchange smiles, and then you’re able to say with confidence, “Hey ______, how’s it going?” That smile on _________’s face gets bigger and you know that you influenced their day, simply by knowing their name and acknowledging them. Or maybe it was just their visit to the grocery store that was improved. Either way….isn’t it worth it?
What about knowing your neighbor? Who does that anymore, right?! All we know is they drive that one car, and that their children run in and out of our yard chasing after a basketball or football depending on whether it’s March or September. They don’t bother us, we don’t bother them. What else matters? Well, the truth of the matter is, lots else matters. When you are half way into making cookies and realize that you are 1 cup of sugar short, it begins to matter. When you realize that you’re under a tornado warning and you don’t have a safe place for you and your family to go, and then you remember that your neighbor has a basement but you don’t know who they are…it matters a great deal, doesn’t it? Well, that is why we’re here.
We are Lubbock Neighbors. This online community exists to bring back “the good old days” that we long for in our actual physical communities…online. We believe that something is missing. We believe that the cup of sugar matters. Although we can’t give you that cup of sugar, we hope that this online community will make it easier for you to ask for one. We want to provide you with an online neighborhood that feeds the desire to know those around you. We want to be the place you go to learn what’s going on in your community, and who’s doing it. Whether it’s a Community Watch program, a babysitting forum, community easter egg hunts, etc…we want to be your go-to place.
Our website home is “under construction” but you can visit our landing page at lubbockneighbors.com where you can “move into the neighborhood” by visiting us on Facebook or Twitter, signing up via email, or submitting your favorite community pics or videos to us on Flikr and Youtube. For now we wanted to let you know who we are and begin blogging and interacting with our neighbors. You can expect different bloggers daily discussing various community topics such as parenting, education, decorating tips, DIY ideas, landscaping, shopping, etc. We will also chat about fun things like movies, music and events here in Lubbock as well as HOT top-10 lists. We hope to even “gossip” about the good stuff like people getting married, having children, or receiving local awards.
I know I’m not nearly as endearing or inviting, nor am I sitting here in an argyle sweater changing my shoes, with a train rolling throughout my living room, but…. won’t you be my neighbor?
